Hydraulic Presses

Hydraulic presses perform most of the same functions as mechanical presses, but speeds are more variable, which means operator involvement is increased.

• Point of Operation
  • Hazards: An adjustable force reciprocating press slide impacts stock at variable speed. The operator is more heavily involved with loading and maneuvering stock, which could produce additional risks.
  • Potential Safeguards: The use of barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices, and hand tools for feeding stock can minimize danger.

Pneumatic Presses

Pneumatic presses derive their power from a compressed air system. While this system is not as adjustable as a hydraulic system, it does tend to be cleaner and easier to operate.

  • Hazard: A forceful reciprocating press slide powered by compressed air impacts stock at variable speed. The operator is involved with loading and maneuvering stock, which could produce additional risks.
  • Potential Safeguards: The use of barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices, and hand tools for feeding stock can minimize danger.

Hydra-mechanical Presses

The hydra-mechanical press, as its name suggests, combines aspects of hydraulic and mechanical power presses. These presses are operated primarily by palm buttons, a foot pedal, or foot switch.

• Point of Operation
  • Hazards: A forceful reciprocating press slide controlled by a foot pedal, foot switch, or palm buttons impacts stock at high speeds.
  • Potential Safeguards: The use of barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices, and a foot pedal cover can minimize danger.
