Pullback & Restraint Devices

Pullback Devices

Pullback devices pull the obstruction out of the way. During a machine's cycle, the worker is able to access the work area during certain times. When a moving arm begins its motion, cables linked from the machine to the worker's arms or wrists pull them out of the way.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Pullback Devices

Pullback devices withdraw the operator's hands from the danger area before the hazardous section of the machine's cycle begins. The use of a pullback device can increase usable area in the workspace as there is no need for bulky guards or other devices. However, one drawback is that some workers may not feel comfortable with a device that limits the movement of their hands.

Restraint Devices

Restraint (holdout) devices, like pullbacks, involve cables attached to the worker's body to prevent access to the hazardous area. However, unlike the pullback devices, restraints do not adjust throughout the cycle; the worker's hands are only able to travel to a certain distance, keeping them outside the danger zone at all times.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Restraint Devices

Restraints are some of the more dependable devices because they are simple and strong. They run little risk of breaking, and require minimal maintenance. However, one drawback is that workers could potentially encounter issues with comfort and freedom of movement when the restraints are in place.
