Scroll Saws & Chop Saws
Scroll Saws
A scroll saw is used for cutting precise and intricate curves into stock. To allow for freedom of movement, the work surface is often circular with the blade in the center.
- Point of Operation:
- Hazard: Although considered safer than most saws, the scroll saw still has a blade moving in a rapid up-and-down motion in the center of the machine.
- Potential Safeguards: Using an adjustable or self-adjusting guard to enclose the entire blade area will help to ensure that only the stock material is cut. Workers may also consider using a push stick to assist in feeding stock.
- Flying Particles
- Hazard: Any time a rotating saw blade is operating, it could fling scrap pieces, chips, or flakes of stock into the air.
- Potential Safeguards: Regular maintenance is key to ensure a sharp blade, and every worker should wear proper eye and face protection.
Chop Saws
A chop saw is composed of a rotating saw blade on a pivoting arm. The arm pivots straight up and down, allowing for precise, square cuts. Neither the stock nor the blade should move laterally during cutting.
- Point of Operation
- Hazard: The rotating blade on a pivoting arm, while mostly controlled, still poses a cutting hazard.
- Potential Safeguards: The use of a fixed guard over the majority of the blade will best protect the operator.
