Hazard Awareness

One of the most important ways to protect yourself against biological hazards is awareness. Know what potential hazards you might encounter in your workplace, and how to identify them.

Be aware of your surroundings. If you have to step or reach into an area you cannot see well (such as grassy or dense vegetation, dark recesses, stacks of boxes, or behind equipment), you can use a long handled object to gently feel around. A flashlight or other source of illumination can help. Even a quick peek is better than stumbling onto a hazard, unaware. Know what's there before putting any part of your body in potential danger.

Wear protective gear, called Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Gloves, boots, eye protection, proper clothing, leg and arm protection, or even respiratory protection can be used to reduce exposure to biological hazards, as well as other hazards.
