Fungi & Protozoa
Two other types of microorganisms are fungi and protozoa. Fungi are plant-like organisms that flourish in moist, dark areas. Examples include yeast and mold. Some types of fungi are harmful to people.
Protozoa are organisms similar to bacteria; amoebas are one type of protozoa. Most types do not hurt people, but a few can cause diseases such as malaria.
Depending on the work environment, you may encounter one or more of these microorganism hazards. The difficulty is recognizing such hazards, since they are often smaller than can be seen without the aid of a microscope.
For diseases transmitted through contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials, see the Compliance Training Online Course Bloodborne Pathogens.
