Immune System

The body's immune system is designed to protect it against potentially harmful substances, such as viruses and bacteria. In some people, their immune system is also sensitive to substances such as pollen, dust, certain foods, animal dander (shed skin), and other similar substances.

When exposed to such substances, the person can have a reaction called an allergic response. The response to allergens (substances causing allergic reaction) can be mild, including itchy skin, hives, rash, watery eyes and nose, headache, and other similar symptoms).

However, in some cases, this allergic reaction can be serious and result in a life-threatening condition called anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis can cause respiratory and or cardia failure, shock, and even death if not treated quickly or properly.
