Tips for Dealing with Specific Biological Hazards - Microorganisms

The following are some tips for dealing with specific biological hazards:

Microorganisms

  • Treat all blood and similar body fluids as if they are infectious. Avoid direct contact; wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water if exposed (see the Bloodborne Pathogens course for more details).
  • Practice proper hygiene; shower thoroughly after work and put on clean clothes.
  • If people around you are sick, wash your hands well with soap and water for at least 30 seconds. If you are sick you should stay at home to recuperate and not expose anyone else.
  • Make sure you are up-to-date on all medicines. If you have known allergies, inform your supervisor. Carry an allergic reaction treatment kit (like an EpiPen®), if necessary; make sure those you work with know how to administer treatment.
