Tips for Dealing with Specific Biological Hazards - Poisonous Plants

The following are some tips for dealing with specific biological hazards:

Poisonous plants

  • Learn to recognize plants such as poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac.
  • Avoid burning these plants; the oils can be released into the air and get into your lungs. Wear respiratory protection if they are being burned (either intentionally or unintentionally). Your employer should help with respirator selection, training, and use as part of a respiratory protection program.
  • Wash exposed clothing in hot water and detergent.
  • Barrier skin creams containing bentoquatam, can offer some protection. They should be washed off and reapplied twice a day.
  • Clean tools with rubbing alcohol or soap and water. Wear disposable gloves during cleaning.
