Snakes

The following are some tips for dealing with specific biological hazards:

Snakes

  • Be careful where you place your hands and feet, especially when moving objects, materials, and debris.
  • Wear heavy gloves, and boots or leg protection (at least 10 inches of coverage).
  • If you see a snake, give it room (at least six to eight feet; they can strike up to half their body length).
  • Know what habitat and homes they prefer: fallen trees, rocks, limbs, debris, piles of leaves, and other similar habitats. They will find warm surfaces on which to sun themselves.
  • Listen for rustling and other telling sounds (rattlesnakes use their rattles to warn you off).
