Venomous Snakes in the US
For workers in outdoor environments, venomous snakes can pose a hazard. The following types of snakes found in the United States are venomous:
- Rattlesnake
- Cotton mouth
- Copperhead
- Coral snake
Different types of rattlesnakes live in almost all parts of the United States. Their color and markings vary (many are green, tan, or light gray with a dark pattern of markings), but they have a distinctive rattle on the tail section that they use as a warning. They can grow from two feet to around eight feet in length.
Cottonmouths, also called water moccasins, live in the south and central states of the U.S. around bodies of water. They can move very quickly in water. They can be dangerous, because of their aggressive behavior.
They can grow up to six feet in length and are dark (blackish gray or green) in color; they can have markings but some can look solid in color. When they open their mouth, it is white in color which gives the snake its name.
Copperheads can be found in lower eastern, central, and southern states. Their reddish brown (copper) colored, leaf-like bands contrast against their tan or light colored bodies. They can reach lengths between two to five feet.
Coral snakes are easy to recognize because of their distinct colors and pattern. They live in central and southern states typically, and have a pattern of red, yellow, and black bands.
They are extremely venomous. They reach lengths between one to four feet. When biting, they can hang on to their victims, unlike other venomous snakes in the United States., which typically strike only once.
If working outdoors, or near sheds or facilities that have potential access to the outdoors, you must be careful of snakes. They likely to hide in tight, covered spaces. Although most venomous snakes are not aggressive, they will bite if they feel threatened.
