West Nile Virus
WNV symptoms can appear anywhere between 3 days to one week after infection. Some infected people show no symptoms, while mild forms (called West Nile fever) can have symptoms such as:
- Headache
- Fever
- Body aches
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Skin rash
West Nile fever cases last only a few days typically, and are not believed to cause any long-term effects.
About 1 in 150 cases result in a severe version of the disease, either West Nile encephalitis or meningitis. Symptoms include:
- Headache
- High fever
- Stiff neck
- Disorientation
- Tremors or convulsions
- Muscle weakness or paralysis
- Coma
The disease can be fatal, so seek medical attention if you think you are infected.
