Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway of ligament and bones at the base of the hand and wrist that houses the median nerve and tendons. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when swollen or thickened tendons compress the median nerve.
Contributing causes of carpal tunnel syndrome can vary, including:
- Hereditary size of the carpal tunnel
- Trauma or injury to the wrist
- Sustained, repetitive motions
- Health conditions that cause fluid retention, like pregnancy or menopause
