Rotator Cuff Syndrome
Sometimes referred to as rotator cuff disorder or shoulder tendinitis, this type of injury occurs when tissues in the shoulder get irritated or damaged. Most rotator cuff disorders are caused by a combination of normal wear-and-tear and overuse of the shoulder joint. For instance, if you have to repeatedly reach over your head to retrieve a heavy manual or book from a shelf, you could be setting yourself up for rotator cuff problems.
Symptoms may begin with pain and weakness in the shoulder. The pain may persist during the night, and you may find it uncomfortable to lie on your side in bed.
Rotator cuff problems often respond well to rest, anti-inflammatory medication, steroid injections, or physical therapy. Most rotator cuff problems are not treated with surgery, unless they involve a torn rotator cuff tendon.
