Using Laptop Computers

While laptop computers provide mobile computing solutions, they are not designed for optimal ergonomic benefit. The display, keyboard, and mouse functions are close together, resulting in compromises to the user's comfort. You may be tempted to use your laptop at a table, lying down, or propped in your lap. This can be acceptable for short-term usage; however, keep the following suggestions in mind if you are using a laptop computer for long periods of time:

  • Use a laptop riser to bring the monitor to the best viewing height.
  • Use an external standard-sized keyboard and mouse.
  • Use a real office chair, not an armchair or side chair.
