Diesel Exhaust Exposure

Diesel exhaust from vehicles and equipment used on oil and gas extraction sites exposes workers to health risks. The impact upon worker health ranges from minor effects (such as eye and nose irritation and headaches and nausea) to life threatening effects (such as respiratory disease and lung cancer).

Human illness is caused when a person inhales diesel exhaust that contains diesel particulate matter (DPM). DPM contains tiny particles of soot that consist of carbon and carbon compounds. All workers who work in the vicinity of diesel-powered equipment may be exposed to harmful diesel exhaust and DPM.
