Electrical Energy Hazards - Prevention Measures

Employers can help workers protect themselves from the risks of electrical injuries and electrocution by implementing and enforcing the use of preventative measures. The demanding work environment typical of oil and gas extraction operations causes above-normal levels of wear and tear on electrical equipment and cords. With this in mind, employers and workers must be extra careful to visually inspect all equipment and cords before use. Any defective electrical equipment or damaged extension and flexible cords should be repaired or taken out of service immediately. The challenging work conditions are often compounded by the remote location of work sites where replacement equipment is not readily available. In these situations, workers may be tempted to modify equipment or cords or use these in ways that are risky. Employers should supply sufficient back-up equipment and make allowances for the time required to procure supplies and perform repairs.
