Ergonomic Hazards - Prevention Measures

General strategies to improve workplace ergonomics include the following:

  • Adapting the work processes to fit the capabilities of workers
  • Reducing the frequency or need for the following types of tasks:
    • Repetitive reaching
    • Forceful exertions
    • Bending and lifting (especially heavy lifting)
    • Working with vibrating equipment
  • Teaching workers how to properly move their bodies when lifting, reaching, and so forth
  • Providing appropriate user controls that emphasize ease of use
  • Training workers to seek early treatment for ergonomics-related injuries in order to prevent permanent injury
  • Improving signage readability by using larger fonts and avoiding direct and indirect sources of glare

Ergonomic strategies should be considered for each specific process and task. Some examples are as follows:

  • Hydraulic and motorized slips that are operated by a foot pedal can help to reduce the awkward postures required to handle slips when tripping pipe.
  • Remote-control stations can be installed to prevent crane operators from exposure to vibration when seated in the crane cab.
  • Automatic driller systems can be installed to eliminate the need for a driller to spend several hours standing while lowering the drill bit manually.
  • Overhead hoists can be used to position heavy parts on a welding table.

Applying ergonomics in the job design of work processes within all phases of an oil and gas extraction operation offers benefits to the operation, as follows:

  • Decreased chance that workers will experience fatigue
  • Decreased instances and severity of work-related musculoskeletal disorders
  • Increased worker safety and productivity
