Explosion & Fire Hazards - Regulations
Employers must comply with the OSHA General Industry standards, Subpart L (29 CFR 1910 Subpart L) Fire Protection guidelines. This subpart of the standards outlines the requirements for the following:
- Fire brigades
- Portable and fixed fire suppression equipment
- Fire detection systems
- Fire or employee alarm system installation
In addition to the standards in Subpart L, requirements for additional explosion and fire prevention measures are woven throughout other sections of the OSHA General Industry standards (29 CFR 1910), as follows:
- Means of egress - fire prevention plans (1910.39)
- Occupational health and environmental controls - ventilation (1910.94)
- Hazardous materials, including the following topics:
- Compressed gases (1910.101)
- Oxygen (1910.104)
- Explosives and blasting agents (1910.109)
- Storage and handling of liquefied petroleum gases (1910.110)
- Materials handling and storage - powered industrial trucks (1910.178)
- Welding, cutting, and brazing (Subpart Q)
