High Noise Levels

Oil and gas extraction workers face an increased risk of hearing loss due to the harmful noise levels they are exposed to on the job. For example, noise sources may include the following:

  • Drilling processes
  • Hydraulic fracturing
  • Machinery and equipment operation
  • Power generators

As with other hazards, the best strategy to protect workers' hearing is to eliminate the noise source. This can be accomplished in the following ways:

  • Choose tools and machinery with lower outputs of noise.
  • Install barriers, such as sound walls and curtains.
  • Schedule the operation time of noisy equipment for time periods in which fewer people will be exposed.
  • Limit the time individual workers spend at noise sources.
  • Where possible, restrict worker access to noise sources.
