Radioactive Material Hazard

Workers in the oil and gas extraction industry are exposed to naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM). Especially at risk are workers who handle pipe and equipment that may be contaminated with NORM (such as radium-226) contained in sludge, drilling mud, and pipe scales. The NORM exposure hazard is increased when workers weld, cut, or ream pipe that contains radioactive scales. Particles that contain radioactive material can become airborne and workers then unknowingly inhale or ingest them. The State of Louisiana refers to these particles as technologically enhanced natural radiation (TENR). TENR is considered to be a subset of NORM.

Exposure to radioactive material has been linked to an increased incidence of bone cancer and lung cancer. Unfortunately, comprehensive research about NORM and TENR hazards has not been undertaken. However, OSHA suggests that it is reasonable to assume that there is radioactive contamination at all oil and gas production sites and pipe handling facilities.
