Respirator Selection
The OSHA Respiratory Protection standard requires different types of respirators based upon research that has determined the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) of different hazards.
To protect workers from silica exposure, employers are required, at minimum, to provide NIOSH-approved N95 half-face respirators to their workers. If the silica level exceeds 10 times the PEL in the work zone, a respirator that provides greater protection is required. A full-facepiece respirator will protect workers up to 50 times the PEL. The more comfortable full-face powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) ensures even greater protection.
