Silica Exposure - Health Risks
Some of the silica particles contained in the clouds of dust are less than 10 micrometers in diameter. These particles, called respirable crystalline silica, are very small and can be inhaled by workers. Over time, the inhalation of these particles may cause silicosis. Silicosis is a lung disease in which silica particles that are trapped in the lungs cause inflammation and scarring. Not only is the lung's ability to take in oxygen reduced, but silicosis may lead to lung cancer, tuberculosis, and other diseases. There are three types of silicosis:
- Chronic or classic silicosis
- Accelerated silicosis
- Acute silicosis
