Slip, Trip, & Fall Hazards - Prevention Measures
To further aid in the prevention of injuries and fatalities from slips, trips, and falls and to minimize injuries when they do happen, employers in the oil and gas extraction industry should implement the following prevention strategies:
- Replace smooth flooring materials in areas that are normally exposed to water, grease, and particulate matter with rougher-surfaced flooring.
- Use a railing and toe-board or a floor hole cover to guard every hole located in the walking or working areas.
- Install guardrails and toe-boards around all elevated open-side platforms, floors, and runways.
- Check that stair treads and nosing are slip resistant and extend the length and width of the whole tread.
- Install more light fixtures in poorly lit areas.
- Adjust discontinuous handrails so that they meet at a consistent height.
- Provide fall protection equipment (such as safety harnesses and line or safety nets) for all jobs that require it.
- In areas where workers may fall onto dangerous machines (such as a conveyor belt) or equipment (such as a vat of acid), provide guardrails and toe-boards, regardless of the elevation of the potential fall.
Falls are one of the most common causes of serious injuries and death. Fortunately, implementing prevention measures and training workers to be alert and protect themselves can reduce the occurrence of falls.
