Struck-By, Caught-In, Caught-Between, and Machine Hazards - Prevention Measures

Because oil and gas extraction workers are exposed to such a wide variety of potential struck-by, caught-in, caught-between, and machine hazards, there are numerous general and very specific preventative measures that employers must take to protect their workers. Earlier in this course, we discussed general recommendations to minimize workplace hazards. In addition to those recommendations, employers must train their workers to take the following precautions:

  • Remain alert and be aware of the activities going on around them.
  • Stand away from moving equipment and suspended, hoisted, or moving loads.
  • Identify, prevent, and protect themselves from all types of potential struck-by, caught-in, caught-between, and machine accidents.

Numerous precautions and preventative measures must be taken that pertain to specific tasks and equipment. It is beyond the scope of this course to list the specific prevention measures related to each of the many work processes in the oil and gas extraction industry. Through its invaluable Oil and Gas Well Drilling and Servicing eTool, OSHA provides detailed guidelines for each process within the phases of oil and gas extraction.
