Work Condition Hazards
In addition to specific work condition hazards, such as those resulting from confined space or respiratory hazards, there are work conditions in the oil and gas extraction industry that are generally hazardous to workers. These hazards include the following:
- Extreme temperatures
- Fatigue due to excessively long work hours
- High noise levels
- Low lighting
All of these work conditions may contribute to and compound the severity of other hazards. Wherever lighting is insufficient, employers should ensure that adequate lighting is installed. In some cases, this may require that temporary lighting be set up and powered by generators. In this section, we will take a closer look at the first three of these hazards - extreme temperatures, fatigue, and high noise levels.
