Controlled Burning
Another type of cleanup involves controlled burning. Oil is burned off the surface of the water, effectively reducing the amount.
Burning can only be done when wind conditions are right (direction, speed). Marsh grasses and other vegetation can be removed using a controlled burn before oil reaches the shore. This can make cleanup easier and faster, reducing the potential of longer-term impact.
One problem with burning is that it causes air pollution which can result in respiratory ailments for workers and people in the nearby community.
