Hazards - Trench Foot

Trench foot, or immersion foot, occurs when feet stay wet for long periods of time. Workers standing in water during cleanup operations can potentially experience this painful condition.

Symptoms can include:

  • Tingling or itching sensation,
  • prickly or heavy feeling,
  • numbness or pain,
  • swelling, and
  • cold or blotchy skin.

When the foot becomes warm, it can become red, dry and painful. Blisters can form, followed by skin or tissue dying and falling off. If you experience any of these symptoms, obtain medical assistance immediately.

To prevent trench foot, exchange wet shoes and socks for dry ones. Air dry and elevate your feet as often as possible.
