Protecting Yourself

Protecting yourself is the first priority. If in doubt about anything, contact your supervisor.

Know your medicines, allergies, and blood type. Make sure this information is readily available in case of an emergency. Have your vaccinations current, especially for tetanus.

If you are providing direct patient care or expect to have contact with blood or other potentially infectious bodily materials, get the Hepatitis B vaccine series.

Wear proper PPE:

  • Rubber type steel toe or shank footwear
  • Oil-resistant gloves when in contact with oil and oil waste
  • Durable gloves when handling debris
  • Hearing protection in noisy environments
  • Safety glasses or goggles
  • Body protection, if necessary

Do not stand in or come into contact with unknown liquids or substances.

Follow the decontamination procedures set by your employer before eating or drinking, using the restroom, or taking a break during the workday. Do a full decontamination, including a shower if available, at the end of your shift.

If exposed to hazardous substances, wash and sanitize immediately using provided cleaners, safety showers, decontamination kits, or other methods provided at the worksite.

When walking on uneven, slippery, rocky, or debris-strewn surfaces, be careful not to slip, trip, or fall.

If walking through water-covered areas, move carefully to avoid tripping over any hidden hazards. Avoid contact with stagnant water.

Exercise caution when handling debris or other materials that could have sharp edges, splinter, or other hazards that could cause cuts or deep wounds.

If an object's surface is contaminated and you are cut with it, the hazardous substance can enter your body and result in health issues.
