Routes of Exposure
You need to understand different ways that a worker can be exposed to a chemical (called a route of entry):
- Inhalation, or breathing in fumes or vapors.
- Injection, such as getting cut by a sharp surface with a chemical contaminant on it.
- Ingestion, or taking in a chemical substance by mouth (usually by eating or smoking around an area with contaminated surfaces).
- Absorption, or skin coming into contact with a chemical substance and sinking in.
