Other PPE
OSHA has issued additional PPE requirements for those employed in construction work. In addition to high-visibility apparel, the following types of PPE are also important:
Head Protection
- A hard hat is required when there is any chance of a worker's head coming into contact with a hard object.
- Hard hats must be inspected regularly for dents, cracks, or other deterioration. If a hard had is no longer in good condition, it must be replaced.
Foot Protection
- Construction workers must wear work shoes or boots with slip-resistant and puncture-resistant soles.
- Safety-toe footwear is required when working in the presence of heavy equipment, tools, or materials.
- Lightweight shoes such as tennis shoes are never acceptable in a roadway work zone.
Hand Protection
- Workers should wear the correct gloves for the job they are performing. For example, concrete work requires the use of heavy-duty rubber gloves.
- Gloves should be sized properly for the individual, and fit snugly.
Eye, Face and Respiratory Protection:
- In some roadway work zones activities, there is a chance of flying debris striking the eyes and face. Safety glasses should be work any time work carries this risk.
- As previously noted, various activities related to working with concrete can release silica dust, which is very dangerous when breathed.
- Select eye, face, and respiratory protection on the basis of the anticipated hazards.
Hearing Protection
- Because the roadway work zone is often a noisy workplace, earplugs or earmuffs may be appropriate.
With all types of PPE, workers must understand its importance to their personal safety, and be trained in the correct use, proper care, and timely disposal of the required equipment.
