Silica Exposure - Railroad Industry

There is a high risk of silica exposure in railroad track repair and maintenance jobs due to the presence and creation of granite rock dust. Railroad track rock, also called ballast rock, is made of granite composed largely of crystalline silica. Railroad repair and maintenance workers manipulate and disturb this rock with heavy machinery while setting, laying, grooming, and maintaining the track.
