Statistics Regarding Exposure

About 320,000 workers are currently exposed to respirable crystalline silica in over 75,000 general industry and maritime workplaces. Exposure to respirable crystalline silica can cause silicosis, lung cancer, other respiratory diseases, and kidney disease.

OSHA estimates that over 100,000 workers are exposed to silica levels exceeding the newly established permissible exposure limit.

The new rule is expected to save 700 lives and prevent 1,600 new cases of silicosis per year. Over 540 silicosis cases would be prevented among general industry and maritime workers alone.
