Types of Abrasives Used in Shipyards

Traditionally, silica sand was the most commonly used blasting abrasive in shipyards. Due to the associated health hazards with silica, the majority of shipyards have chosen a safer abrasive blasting agent. However, alternative abrasive agents can also result in dangerous levels of other air contaminants, such as heavy metals. Employers should choose the safest blasting agent that is appropriate for the work being performed. Also, employers should be aware that alternative abrasive agents may not eliminate silica exposure if the substrates that are being blasted contain silica.
