Vacuum Dust Collection Systems

When wet methods cannot be used for controlling silica dust, a good alternative is to use a vacuum dust collection (VDC) system.

With these types of systems, a vacuum pulls dust directly from the cutting point through special fittings connected to the saw. Alternatively, a dust collection device may be connected to the back of the saw. To work properly, a dust collector (which is basically an exterior hood) mounted to the back of the saw needs high exhaust airflow between the saw blade and dust collector.

When operating a vacuum dust collection system, follow these practices:

  • Ensure that all hoses are clean and free of cracks.
  • Make sure that appropriate filters and dust bags are in good condition, and are changed or emptied as needed.
  • Check the equipment daily for signs of poor dust capture or dust leaks.
  • Use HEPA filters for maximum dust control.
  • Erect baffles on each side of the saw to improve dust capture performance by the rear-mounted dust collection devices or exterior hoods.
  • Review the manufacturer's operating specifications and recommendations for your equipment.
