AED Procedures

When using an AED device, observe the following procedures:

  • Turn on the AED.
    • Follow the voice or visual prompts on the device's screen.
  • Wipe the victim's bare chest dry.
    • Remove any medication patches with a gloved hand.
  • Attach the defibrillator pads.
    • Do not use pediatric (children's) AED pads or equipment on an adult or a child older than 8 years or weighing more than 55 pounds.
  • If necessary, plug in the connector.
  • Clear the immediate area.
    • Ensure that no one, including you, is touching the victim.
    • Tell everyone present to "stand clear" of the victim.
  • Allow the AED to analyze the victim's heart rhythm.
    • If necessary, push the "Analyze" button.
  • Deliver shock, if advised.
    • Again, ensure no one is making contact, whether direct or indirect, with the victim.
    • Advise everyone to "Stand clear" before pushing the "Shock" button, if necessary.
  • Perform CPR.
    • After delivering the shock or if a shock is not advised, perform 2 minutes, or 5 cycles, of CPR and continue to follow the AED prompts.
    • If two trained responders are present, one should perform CPR while the other operates the AED device.
