Critical Incident Stress Management

Critical incident stress management (CISM) is an adaptive, short-term psychological helping-process that focuses solely on an immediate and identifiable problem. By allowing victims to talk about the incident freely and without judgment, CISM helps people deal with trauma one incident at a time.

By focusing solely on comforting a victim in an emergency situation, the responder sometimes takes on the stress of the situation and is left with the burden of carrying that stress after the situation is resolved.
