Considerations Prior to Providing First Aid
Quick application of first aid is critical in an emergency. However, to prevent further harm to the victim(s) or yourself, there are some elements to consider before springing into action.
In general industries, the most common types of injuries are overexertion injuries, slipping and tripping, falling from heights, reaction injuries (trying to catch yourself while falling, for example), and falling object injuries. Construction workers in particular are susceptible to falling-type and struck by object injuries. Surface and underground miners must be prepared for unplanned explosions or wall collapses. Coal miners have the added risk of developing black lung disease on the job.
Understanding the types of injuries you may encounter in the workplace increases your response time in a situation requiring first aid.
