Controlling External Bleeding

The following are guidelines for controlling a victim's bleeding wounds:

  • Cover the wound with a sterile dressing.
  • Apply direct pressure until the bleeding stops.
  • Cover the dressing with a bandage.
    • Check for circulation (feeling, warmth, and color) beyond the source of the injury.

If the bleeding does not stop, call 911 and apply more pressure to the wound. Add additional dressings and bandages as necessary. Attempt to keep the victim calm to minimize the effects of shock. Always wash your hands with soap and water after giving care, even if you did not directly contact any bodily fluids.
