CPR Procedures

CPR should only be used when the patient is not breathing and is unresponsive. The following are standard procedures for administering CPR:

  • Give the victim 30 chest compressions.
    • The victim must be a on a firm, flat surface before this step.
    • Push hard and fast in the middle of the chest at least 2 inches deep and at a rate of approximately 100 chest compressions per minute.
  • Give the victim 2 rescue breaths.
    • Tilt the head back, lift the chin up, and pinch the victim's nose to form a complete seal over the mouth.
    • Blow into the victim's mouth for about one second.
    • If the victim's chest does not rise, reposition the head before giving a second breath.
    • If the second breath does not make the chest rise, the person may be choking; if so, check for an object in the throat after each set of chest compressions before attempting rescue breathing.
    • Continue CPR after removing the obstruction, if possible.
  • Repeat the process; do not stop unless:
    • You observe obvious signs of life.
    • You see that another trained responder or EMS personnel is ready to take over.
    • You are too exhausted to continue.
    • An AED is ready to use.
