External Certifications

Some occupational roles require external certifications. First aid training is typically received through the American Heart Association (AHA), the American Red Cross (ARC), the National Safety Council (NSC), and private institutions. The AHA, ARC, and NSC all offer entry-level and advanced first aid training courses via their local chapter or training centers. After completing the program and passing a written exam and practical test, trainees receive certificates verifying their first aid training and CPR training. An emphasis on quick response in a situation requiring first aid is present in all programs. Other program elements typically include:

  • Basic first aid intervention
  • Basic adult CPR
  • Universal precautions for self-protection

Specific program elements include training specific to the type of injury, and instruction on the basic principles of first aid specific to different parts of the body.

Employers are responsible for determining if and which training certification(s) employees should receive.
