First Aid Care for Head, Neck, or Spinal Injuries
Head, neck, or spinal injuries require medical intervention from a qualified individual. Call 911 immediately if you suspect a victim has suffered a head, neck, or spinal injury.
There are some steps to observe in preparation of the arrival of EMS:
- Minimize the movement of the head, neck, and spine.
- Do not move the victim unless other life-threatening conditions exist (such as a burn hazard).
- Stabilize the victim's head in the position found.
- Support the head with both hands on either side of the head.
- If the head is turned sharply to one side, do not attempt to reposition it.
