MSHA General Requirements: HAZCOM Training
Both surface and underground miners must undergo HAZCOM training before beginning work. The training should cover all chemicals a miner may come in contact with, labeling and use restrictions, as well as how to handle emergencies involving chemicals.
There exist provisions for guarding trade secrets concerning certain chemicals used in a mine site. However, in a medical emergency the mine operator must disclose the chemical content to aid in the treatment of a miner or miners.
Any spill should be treated as hazardous regardless of the chemical content, and work in the area is not permitted until the spill has been cleaned by qualified persons.
