OSHA First-Aid Kit Requirements: Construction

In applicable construction industries, first aid supplies must be readily accessible. OSHA recommends employers follow the ANSI Z308.1-1978 standard, "Minimum Requirements for Industrial Unit-Type First-Aid Kits," for stocking the company's first-aid kit. However, in 2003, ANSI updated the standard to match ANSI Z308.1-1998, and OSHA has yet to adopt the revised standard.

The revised ANSI standard requires:

  • One absorbent compress - no smaller than 32 square inches with no side smaller than four inches
  • 16 adhesive bandages measuring at least one inch by three inches
  • One 5-yard roll of adhesive tape
  • 10 half-gram antiseptic applications
  • Six half-gram burn treatment applications
  • Two pairs of medical exam gloves
  • Four sterile pads measuring 3 inches by 3 inches
  • One triangular bandage measuring 40 inches by 40 inches by 56 inches

Additionally, ANSI recommends the following optional first-aid kit contents:

  • Four 2-inch by 2-inch bandage compresses
  • Two 3-inch by 3-inch bandage compresses
  • One 4-inch by 4-inch bandage compress
  • One eye covering with means of attachment
  • One fluid ounce of eye wash
  • One 4-inch by 5-inch cold pack
  • Two roller bandages measuring 2 inches
  • One roller bandage measuring 4 inches

All first aid supplies must be stored in suitable, sanitary, dust-tight, moisture-proof containers, and such supplies must be accessible to all workers.
