OSHA First-Aid Kit Requirements: General Industries

Under Section 1910.151 of 29 CFR, OSHA requires that any workplace lacking reasonable access to prompt medical attention have an adequate store of first aid supplies.

OSHA recommends workplaces follow the ANSI Z308.1-1998 standard, "Minimum Requirements for First-Aid Kits," for stocking the company's first-aid kit at a small worksite. Larger worksites should determine the need for addition kits in additional, easily accessible locations.

The ANSI standard requires:

  • One absorbent compress - no smaller than 32 square inches with no side smaller than four inches
  • 16 adhesive bandages measuring at least 1 inch by 3 inches
  • One 5-yard roll of adhesive tape
  • 10 half-gram antiseptic applications
  • Six half-gram burn treatment applications
  • Two pairs of medical exam gloves
  • 4 sterile pads measuring 3 inches by 3 inches
  • One triangular bandage measuring 40 inches by 40 inches by 56 inches

OSHA recommends that employers periodically use OSHA 300 forms or internal reporting to reevaluate first-aid kit needs.
