Risk Assessment
Before developing a first aid program, it is essential that a business analyze its needs. This means obtaining and evaluating information pertaining to common injuries and illnesses at a given worksite. Employers may use the OSHA 300 log, OSHA 301 forms, or their Workers' Compensation insurance carrier's reports in order to identify their specific first aid needs. Further risk assessment research may be done through internal reporting and using Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data pertaining to national rates of illness, injury, and fatalities in the workplace.
Employers should also make an effort to obtain response time estimates from local EMS providers for all permanent and temporary work locations for all hours that workers will be on duty. It is also recommended that employer's consult with local fire and rescue and medical professionals for additional program information, such as additional response times.
