First Aid Care for Stroke Victims
One of the most prominent sudden illnesses striking employees in all industries is a stroke. Knowing how to quickly identify a stroke victim increases their chances of receiving care in a timely manner. To assess a stroke, remember to think FAST. Fast stands for:
Face - Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face appear to droop?
Arm - Ask the person to raise both arms parallel with the ground. Does one arm drift more downward than the other?
Speech - Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase, such as the "The sky is blue." Is the speech slurred or jumbled?
Time - Try to determine when the victim's symptoms began. If any of the previous conditions are met, call 911 and report the time of onset to EMS personnel.
Continue to provide care based on the conditions present while you wait for EMS response.
