Training Assessment & Refresher Training
Assessing the effectiveness of a training program should include instructor observation of acquired skills implemented in practical scenarios and written assessments.
Program Update
Employers should review their first aid program annually to determine if it matches the needs of the workplace. Training, policies, supplies, and equipment should be added or modified based on any changes to workplace hazards. Changes to worksite locations, equipment, and schedules may factor in to the program review as well.
The first-aid training program should be kept up-to-date with current techniques and knowledge. Outdated training and reference materials should be replaced or removed entirely from a training program.
Refresher Training
First aid responders may encounter a long period of time between learning a skill and implementing the skill in a real-world situation. Because of this, OSHA recommends periodical refresher training every six to 12 months. The American Heart Association's Emergency Cardiovascular Care Committee encourages skills review and practice sessions at least every six months for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and AED skills.
