Causes of Drowning

Drowning can result from a variety of hazards while working on, in, or near water, such as:

  • Rushing water (such as tides and flooding),
  • Boating and maritime accidents,
  • Slippery surfaces (such as rocks or muddy banks near water),
  • Heat stress (such as cramps, exhaustion and fatigue),
  • Injuries, especially to the head, neck, or back (which cause the worker to fall into the water)
  • Falls into water while working at heights, or
