Drowning can result from a variety of hazards while working on, in, or near water, such as:
- Rushing water (such as tides and flooding),
- Boating and maritime accidents,
- Slippery surfaces (such as rocks or muddy banks near water),
- Heat stress (such as cramps, exhaustion and fatigue),
- Injuries, especially to the head, neck, or back (which cause the worker to fall into the water)
- Falls into water while working at heights, or
- Incapacitating bites or stings from animals.
