Life-Saving Skiff

OSHA also requires that at least one life-saving skiff is immediately available at locations where employees are working adjacent to or over water. The purpose of a skiff is to facilitate the rapid rescue of workers who fall into water.

Even in shallow water, a skiff can greatly reduce the amount of time it takes to reach an employee in the water. However, in cases where the employee is working in an area very close to the water's edge, a skiff would not prove useful.

In water so shallow that rescuers could simply run in or a skiff would get stuck on the bottom, a skiff is not required.
