Maintaining Personal Floatation Device
A PFD must be cared for and checked regularly. Follow the provided instructions for care and maintenance. OSHA requires PFDs must be maintained in a safe condition, and removed from use when damaged in a way that affects buoyancy or fastening capability.
Never alter your PFD. Avoid crushing your PFD; it can affect the buoyancy. Dry the PFD thoroughly before storing it in a well-ventilated location. Do not dry the PFD using any direct heat source (dryer, heater, and so on).
If you are the only wearer, the Coast Guard recommends putting your name on your life vest.
Inspect the PFD often for rips, tears, holes, and so on. Make sure the seams, fabric straps, and hardware are okay. There should be no signs of water logging, mildew, or shrinkage. If you see any signs of damage, report it to your supervisor.
